Daily Pulse — July 3, 2026
KOSPI +5.76% | KOSDAQ +0.19% | A 440-point rally with no net buyer
FACT. The KOSPI rose 440 points to 8,088.34, a 5.76% gain — yet foreign, institutional, and retail investors each recorded net zero in cash equities, and foreign futures held at zero contracts for a twelfth consecutive session. SK Hynix rose roughly 10.9% even as the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 5.44%. The two names that drove the move — Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, about 35% of KOSPI weight — never appeared on the foreign cash buy list.
FACT. Where foreign cash did go was selective and downstream: Samsung Electro-Mechanics +KRW 128.6B (~$93.2M), Daedeok Electronics +KRW 53.3B (~$38.6M), LG Innotek +KRW 52.2B (~$37.8M), Hyundai Motor +KRW 41.2B (~$29.9M), and Hyundai Mobis +KRW 29.0B (~$21.0M) — components and substrates, not the index heavyweights.
FACT. Three catalysts framed the day. Bloomberg reported Korean authorities preparing for currency inflows tied to an SK Hynix US listing; USD/KRW firmed toward 1,520 from 1,555 two sessions earlier, beyond what a 0.64% DXY decline alone explains; and Samsung Electro-Mechanics disclosed a new subsidiary equity investment on DART — a name foreign capital had bought for three straight sessions.
VIEW. A 5.76% move that no investor class claims is not a recovery; it is index mechanics and short-covering filling a vacuum. The repatriation story is the real variable, and its direction is unresolved: if proceeds route into a USD-listed SK Hynix ADR, Korean investors capture the exposure without touching domestic equities, and the KOSPI loses index weight rather than gaining a foreign demand catalyst.
VIEW. Samsung Electronics reports Q2 earnings next week into a thinner floor — the retail investor deposit base has contracted from KRW 132.5T (~$95.7B) to KRW 120.1T (~$86.9B) since June 17.
The trade is simple: watch whether foreign futures move from zero to net long before Samsung's Q2 print. Until they do, the rally has no owner.
