Daily Pulse: October 14, 2026
KOSPI -0.44% | KOSDAQ -1.57% | KOSPI opened at 6,062, reached 6,191, then closed at 6,009: foreign cash sold KRW 1.40 trillion (~$1.0B) with SK Hynix absorbing 51% of that total while the index gave back 2.94% from the session high
The Number That Matters
Foreign net cash selling was KRW 1.40 trillion (~$1.0B). SK Hynix absorbed KRW 710B (~$531M) and Samsung Electronics KRW 190B (~$142M), together equalling 64% of total foreign selling and 4.2% of KOSPI session turnover of KRW 21.39 trillion (~$16.0B). The KOSPI closed 64 points above the session low of 5,945, giving back 2.94% from the intraday high.
Where the Money Went
Foreign sellers concentrated in SK Hynix at KRW 710B (~$531M), Samsung Electronics at KRW 190B (~$142M), Jusung Engineering at KRW 87B (~$65M), Samsung Electronics preferred shares at KRW 66B (~$49M) and DB Insurance at KRW 33B (~$25M). Foreign buying in SK Square, HMM and Hanmi Pharmaceutical totalled KRW 89B (~$67M), or 9% of foreign selling in the top three names. Among the four institutional sub-categories this report tracks, financial investment bought KRW 395B (~$295M) and pension funds bought KRW 35B (~$26M), while investment trusts sold KRW 38B (~$29M) and private equity bought KRW 112B (~$84M). Non-arbitrage program trading sold KRW 299B (~$223M) across the market; total program net selling was KRW 259B (~$193M). Retail bought KRW 9B (~$7M) net. Samsung SDI was the single name where foreign buyers and institutional buyers both concentrated while retail sold.
Why the Market Moved
1. Foreign cash sold KRW 1.40 trillion (~$1.0B) while foreign futures bought 3,557 contracts, moving in opposite directions; SK Hynix alone absorbed KRW 710B (~$531M) in foreign selling.
2. Non-arbitrage program trading sold KRW 299B (~$223M) across the market, adding mechanical pressure on the sell side.
3. Samsung SDI drew simultaneous foreign and institutional buying against retail selling, the only conviction name in the session.
The Uncomfortable Question
Foreign selling in SK Hynix fell to KRW 710B (~$531M) from KRW 2.38 trillion (~$1.8B) in the prior reported session, yet the two-stock concentration structure held at 64%. The previous watchpoint asked whether SK Hynix selling would exceed that prior level; it did not. The question is whether the reduced selling volume in SK Hynix reflects any change in the underlying structure, or only a single session's variance while the directional posture remains unchanged.

KoreaAlpha Take
The concentration structure has not broken. SK Hynix drew 51% of foreign cash selling on a day when total foreign selling was KRW 1.40 trillion (~$1.0B), down from KRW 4.46 trillion (~$3.3B) in the prior session. Pension funds bought KRW 35B (~$26M), below the KRW 48B (~$36M) seen two sessions ago. Foreign futures bought 3,557 contracts while foreign cash sold, repeating the split direction seen in the session before the prior one. The SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics treasury share programmes are scheduled to run to 19 and 21 November respectively; as execution advances toward those dates, the price-insensitive bid beneath these names shrinks. The question is whether the reduced daily selling volume in SK Hynix reflects a structural shift or a single session's pause. The trade is simple: watch whether the two-stock share of foreign cash selling remains above 60% in the next session.
