KOSPI -7.57% | KOSDAQ -7.65% | KOSPI opened at 5,673, reached 5,751, then closed at 5,554: foreign cash sold KRW 3.54 trillion (~$2.6B) with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix absorbing 77% of that total while the index gave back 3.43% from the session high
The Number That Matters
Foreign net cash selling was KRW 3.54 trillion (~$2.6B). Samsung Electronics absorbed KRW 1.55 trillion (~$1.2B) and SK Hynix KRW 1.18 trillion (~$881M), together equalling 77% of total foreign selling and 9.5% of KOSPI session turnover of KRW 28.64 trillion (~$21.3B). The KOSPI closed 103 points above the session low of 5,451, giving back 3.43% from the intraday high. Samsung Electronics closed at 210,000 won, down 9.48%.
Where the Money Went
Foreign sellers concentrated in Samsung Electronics at KRW 1.55 trillion (~$1.2B), SK Hynix at KRW 1.18 trillion (~$881M), Samsung Electro-Mechanics at KRW 254B (~$189M), Samsung SDI at KRW 181B (~$135M) and KB Financial at KRW 81B (~$60M). Foreign buying in HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Pharma Research and Jusung Engineering totalled KRW 73B (~$54M), or 2.44% of foreign selling in the top three sell names. Among the four institutional sub-categories this report tracks, financial investment bought KRW 2.27 trillion (~$1.7B), while investment trusts sold KRW 379B (~$282M), private equity sold KRW 367B (~$273M) and pension funds sold KRW 31B (~$23M). Total program trading bought KRW 638B (~$474M) across the market. Retail bought KRW 1.32 trillion (~$981M) net, with Samsung Electronics at KRW 984B (~$731M) and SK Hynix at KRW 513B (~$382M) the two largest entries. No name drew simultaneous conviction buying from both foreign and institutional investors.
Why the Market Moved
1. Foreign cash sold KRW 3.54 trillion (~$2.6B) while foreign futures bought 5,544 contracts, moving in opposite directions; Samsung Electronics alone absorbed KRW 1.55 trillion (~$1.2B) in foreign selling.
2. SOX stood at 11,684, down 4.30%.
3. The US 10-year yield stood at 5.19%.
The Uncomfortable Question
Retail absorbed KRW 1.32 trillion (~$981M) in a session where foreign sellers offloaded KRW 3.54 trillion (~$2.6B) and the two-stock concentration in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix reached 77%. Financial investment bought KRW 2.27 trillion (~$1.7B); program trading of KRW 638B (~$474M) across the market is embedded in that figure. Pension funds sold KRW 31B (~$23M). The question is whether financial investment buying at this scale reflects discretionary conviction or mechanical program execution, and whether retail alone can sustain absorption of two-stock foreign selling at this volume.

KoreaAlpha Take
The concentration structure has not only held, it has deepened. Samsung Electronics drew 44% of total foreign cash selling at KRW 1.55 trillion (~$1.2B), outpacing SK Hynix at KRW 1.18 trillion (~$881M). Pension funds sold KRW 31B (~$23M). Financial investment bought KRW 2.27 trillion (~$1.7B), but program trading of KRW 638B (~$474M) across the market is embedded in that figure. The two-stock foreign selling continued on this session; the question is whether Samsung Electronics outpacing SK Hynix as the larger foreign sell target reflects a change in where the selling is aimed, or only this session's variance. The trade is simple: watch whether Samsung Electronics' share of foreign cash selling exceeds SK Hynix's share again in the next session.
