KOSPI -3.26% | KOSDAQ -1.69% | Foreign cash and futures sold together for the third straight session: KRW 3.44T (~$2.6B) cash, 2,891 contracts

The Number That Matters

Foreign cash sold KRW 3.44T (~$2.6B) and futures sold 2,891 contracts on the same session. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics absorbed 86% of total foreign selling, at KRW 2.09T (~$1.6B) and KRW 872B (~$648M) respectively, representing 13.7% of KOSPI turnover. The KOSPI opened at 6,692, reached 6,774, then closed at 6,684, giving back the entire session gain and more.

Where the Money Went

Foreign net selling of KRW 3.44T (~$2.6B) concentrated in SK Hynix at KRW 2.09T (~$1.6B), Samsung Electronics at KRW 872B (~$648M), and Samsung Electronics preferred shares at KRW 211B (~$157M). Foreign buying across the top three names, Woori Financial at KRW 43B (~$32M), Alteogen at KRW 35B (~$26M) and Hanmi Semiconductor at KRW 25B (~$18M), summed to KRW 103B (~$77M), 3% of the KRW 3.17T (~$2.4B) sold across the three largest foreign sell names. Institutional net selling of KRW 1.21T (~$899M) included pension funds at KRW 52B (~$39M), extending three consecutive sessions of net selling. Retail bought KRW 3.14T (~$2.3B), concentrated in SK Hynix at KRW 1.55T (~$1.1B) and Samsung Electronics at KRW 891B (~$662M). No foreign and institutional conviction buy existed today.

Why the Market Moved

1. Foreign cash and futures sold in the same direction for the third consecutive session, with semiconductor concentration at 86% of the foreign total; the KOSPI closed at 6,684.

2. SOX closed at 11,824 (+1.81%) on Friday, making the domestic semiconductor selloff a deliberate exit rather than a global-driven move.

3. Program trading net sold KRW 2.85T (~$2.1B), amplifying the institutional outflow.

The Uncomfortable Question

All four institutional sub-categories this report tracks sold today. Pension funds, which had provided the lone institutional bid on September 11, extended net selling to KRW 52B (~$39M). Retail absorbed KRW 3.14T (~$2.3B), almost entirely in the two names foreign investors were exiting. The question is whether retail absorption of foreign semiconductor selling has any structural limit before exhaustion forces a price discontinuity.

Key Disclosures Today

Posco Future M filed a subsidiary rights offering decision and a related acquisition of shares in a subsidiary; no KRW amount was disclosed in the filing summary.

KoreaAlpha Take

SOX rose 1.81% on Friday. Foreign sellers still distributed KRW 2.96T (~$2.2B) in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics today, making this a deliberate position reduction, not a reaction to global weakness. Among the four institutional sub-categories this report tracks, all sold, including pension funds, which had been a net buyer on September 11. Retail absorbed KRW 3.14T (~$2.3B) with all three of its largest buys in the two names foreign investors were exiting. The question the data cannot settle is whether that retail absorption has a structural limit before it forces a price discontinuity. The trade is simple: watch whether foreign net cash selling in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics maintains the 86% concentration structure in the next session.
