KOSPI -2.62% | KOSDAQ -0.69% | KOSPI opened at 6,808, touched 6,810, then closed at 6,625: foreign cash and futures sold in the same direction as retail absorbed KRW 3.05 trillion (~$2.3B) while Samsung Electronics drew KRW 1.39 trillion (~$1.0B) in retail buying against KRW 1.43 trillion (~$1.1B) in combined foreign and institutional selling

The Number That Matters

Foreign net cash selling was KRW 2.00 trillion (~$1.5B). SK Hynix and SK Square accounted for KRW 1.22 trillion (~$909M) of that total, or 61% of aggregate foreign selling. The KOSPI closed at the session low, surrendering the entire intraday range from open to close. The give-back from the session high of 6,810 was 2.71%.

Where the Money Went

Foreign sellers concentrated in SK Hynix at KRW 866B (~$644M), SK Square at KRW 357B (~$266M) and Samsung Electronics at KRW 352B (~$262M). Foreign buying in Issuepetasys, Jusung Engineering and Wonik IPS totalled KRW 187B (~$139M), roughly 11.9% of foreign selling in the top three names. Institutions sold KRW 1.78 trillion (~$1.3B) net; financial investment led at KRW 2.02 trillion (~$1.5B) sold, while investment trusts bought KRW 247B (~$184M). Total program trading sold KRW 1.20 trillion (~$896M) across the market, with non-arbitrage at KRW 935B (~$696M) and arbitrage at KRW 268B (~$199M). Pension funds sold KRW 24B (~$18M) net. Retail bought KRW 3.05 trillion (~$2.3B) net, with Samsung Electronics at KRW 1.39 trillion (~$1.0B) the single largest entry. No name drew simultaneous conviction buying from both foreign and institutional investors.

Why the Market Moved

1. Foreign cash and futures moved in the same direction; SK Hynix absorbed KRW 866B (~$644M) in foreign selling against KRW 211B (~$157M) in retail buying.

2. Total program trading sold KRW 1.20 trillion (~$896M) across the market, with non-arbitrage accounting for KRW 935B (~$696M) of that total.

3. Samsung Electronics drew KRW 1.39 trillion (~$1.0B) in retail buying against KRW 1.43 trillion (~$1.1B) in combined foreign and institutional selling; the KOSPI closed at the session low.

The Uncomfortable Question

Retail absorbed KRW 3.05 trillion (~$2.3B) in a session where foreign sellers offloaded KRW 2.00 trillion (~$1.5B) and institutions sold KRW 1.78 trillion (~$1.3B). Samsung Electronics alone drew KRW 1.39 trillion (~$1.0B) in retail buying against combined selling that exceeded it. The question is how long retail can absorb this volume across both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix with no institutional partner on the other side of the trade.

Key Disclosures Today

Samsung Electronics filed preliminary consolidated operating results (DART 20261008800004); this report does not restate the filing's figures.

KoreaAlpha Take

Retail is now running a two-stock absorption trade with no institutional partner: Samsung Electronics at KRW 1.39 trillion (~$1.0B) and SK Hynix at KRW 211B (~$157M) in retail buying, against KRW 1.43 trillion (~$1.1B) and KRW 912B (~$679M) in combined foreign and institutional selling across the same names. Pension funds sold KRW 24B (~$18M) today, a figure small enough to confirm the prior session's watchpoint: the structure has not changed. The unresolved question is whether retail's capacity to absorb this two-stock selling has any floor that is not retail itself. The trade is simple: watch whether foreign net cash selling in SK Hynix exceeds KRW 866B (~$644M) in the next session.

Flow figures are KRX investor-type trading value across all listed boards (KOSPI, KOSDAQ, KONEX), common stock only, excluding ETF, ETN and ELW; institutions = the KRX institutional total investor type. Foreign, institutional and retail do not sum to zero: the balance, KRW 736B (~$548M) net bought on this session, sits with other corporations and other foreign investors, categories this report does not collect.
