KOSPI -1.98% | KOSDAQ -2.34% | KOSPI opened at 6,864, reached 6,978, then closed at 6,804: foreign cash and futures sold in the same direction as SK Hynix absorbed KRW 1.38T (~$1.0B) in foreign selling while retail stepped in with KRW 867B (~$647M)

The Number That Matters

Foreign net cash selling was KRW 2.89T (~$2.2B). SK Hynix and Hyosung Heavy Industries accounted for KRW 1.60T (~$1.2B) of that total, or 56% of aggregate foreign selling. Strip those two names out and foreigners were net sellers of the remainder as well. The session high of 6,978 was given back entirely; the close sat 2.49% below the intraday peak.

Where the Money Went

Foreign selling concentrated in SK Hynix at KRW 1.38T (~$1.0B), Hyosung Heavy Industries at KRW 226B (~$168M), LG Electronics at KRW 135B (~$101M), SK Square at KRW 91B (~$68M) and Hanwha Aerospace at KRW 89B (~$66M). Foreign buying in Samsung Electronics preferred shares, DB Hi-Tek and APR totalled KRW 136B (~$101M), roughly 4.3% of foreign selling in the top three names. Institutions sold KRW 920B (~$686M) net; pension funds led at KRW 341B (~$254M), with private equity at KRW 164B (~$122M), financial investment at KRW 218B (~$163M) and investment trusts at KRW 135B (~$101M). Non-arbitrage program trading sold KRW 2.25T (~$1.7B) across the market. Retail bought KRW 3.11T (~$2.3B) net, with SK Hynix at KRW 867B (~$647M) the single largest entry. APR and SK Innovation drew simultaneous conviction buying from both foreign and institutional investors, with retail selling KRW 46B (~$34M) and KRW 40B (~$30M) into both.

Why the Market Moved

1. Foreign cash and futures moved in the same direction; SK Hynix absorbed KRW 1.38T (~$1.0B) in foreign selling against KRW 867B (~$647M) in retail buying.

2. Non-arbitrage program trading sold KRW 2.25T (~$1.7B) across the market.

3. Pension funds were the largest institutional seller at KRW 341B (~$254M), a shift in sub-category leadership from prior sessions.

The Uncomfortable Question

Retail absorbed KRW 867B (~$647M) of SK Hynix in a single session while foreign sellers offloaded KRW 1.38T (~$1.0B) in the same name. The question is who absorbs the foreign semiconductor selling once price-insensitive institutional buyers complete their scheduled runs and the retail appetite on the other side of this trade runs dry.

Key Disclosures Today

LG Electronics filed preliminary consolidated operating results for the period (DART 20261007800145); no specific KRW figure was disclosed in this filing.

KoreaAlpha Take

Retail is now the marginal buyer of last resort for SK Hynix, absorbing KRW 867B (~$647M) in a single session against foreign selling that no institutional desk was willing to meet. That is not a sign of conviction; it is a sign that the institutional side of the trade has already made its decision. Pension funds led institutional selling at KRW 341B (~$254M) today; unlike financial investment, pension mandates do not run systematic program schedules, which means this selling carries a different signal than prior sessions. The trade is simple: watch whether pension funds sell SK Hynix again in the next session.

Flow figures are KRX investor-type trading value across all listed boards (KOSPI, KOSDAQ, KONEX), common stock only, excluding ETF, ETN and ELW; institutions = the KRX institutional total investor type. Foreign, institutional and retail do not sum to zero: the balance, KRW 700B (~$522M) net bought on this session, sits with other corporations and other foreign investors, categories this report does not collect.
