Daily Pulse: October 6, 2026
KOSPI -0.89% | KOSDAQ +2.98% | KOSPI opened at 7,044, touched 7,044, and closed at 6,941: SK Hynix drew KRW 1.41T (~$1.1B) in foreign selling while foreign and institutional investors bought Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI in the same direction
The Number That Matters
Foreign net cash selling was KRW 1.63T (~$1.2B). Foreign selling in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics came to KRW 1.98T (~$1.5B), or 121% of that total, meaning those two names alone exceeded aggregate foreign selling. Strip them out and foreigners were net buyers of the rest of the market. The structure of this market has not changed in weeks.
Where the Money Went
Foreign sellers concentrated in SK Hynix at KRW 1.41T (~$1.1B) and Samsung Electronics at KRW 566B (~$423M). Against that, foreign buying in Samsung Electro-Mechanics at KRW 162B (~$121M), Jusung Engineering at KRW 150B (~$112M) and Samsung SDI at KRW 101B (~$75M) totalled KRW 413B (~$308M), roughly 21% of foreign selling in the top two names. Institutions bought KRW 104B (~$78M) net; financial investment led at KRW 250B (~$186M), with investment trusts selling KRW 28B (~$21M), private equity selling KRW 77B (~$57M) and pension funds selling KRW 45B (~$33M). Non-arbitrage program trading sold KRW 1.08T (~$809M). Retail bought KRW 533B (~$398M) net, with SK Hynix at KRW 960B (~$717M) the largest single entry. Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI drew simultaneous conviction buying from both foreign and institutional investors, with retail selling KRW 244B (~$182M) and KRW 183B (~$136M) into both.
Why the Market Moved
1. Foreign cash and futures moved in the same direction; SK Hynix absorbed KRW 1.41T (~$1.1B) in foreign selling while retail stepped in at KRW 960B (~$717M).
2. Non-arbitrage program trading sold KRW 1.08T (~$809M) across the market, a flow the data does not assign to any one investor group.
3. Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI drew foreign and institutional conviction buying simultaneously, as did Jusung Engineering.
The Uncomfortable Question
Foreign net selling of KRW 1.63T (~$1.2B) was exceeded by the two semiconductor names alone. SK Hynix absorbed KRW 1.41T (~$1.1B) in foreign selling and KRW 960B (~$717M) in retail buying in the same session. The question this data cannot answer is who absorbs the foreign semiconductor selling once the concentration in these two names eases or the buyers on the other side run out of conviction.
Key Disclosures Today
Youngone filed a treasury share acquisition trust contract decision (DART 20261006000337); no KRW amount was disclosed in this filing.
KoreaAlpha Take
The two-stock concentration in foreign selling held again: foreign selling in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics equalled 121% of total foreign net cash selling. Retail absorbed KRW 960B (~$717M) of SK Hynix alone. The watchpoint carried since October 1, whether foreign net cash in SK Hynix turns positive, came in at negative KRW 1.41T (~$1.1B), the largest single-name foreign sell figure since that watchpoint began. The question the data cannot answer is what happens to this two-stock absorption structure when the buyers on the other side of the trade, retail today, exhaust their appetite. The trade is simple: watch whether foreign net cash in SK Hynix turns positive in the next session.
Correction, 7 October 2026: an earlier version said foreign selling in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics exceeded total foreign net selling by 121%. It equalled 121% of that total, which is 21% more than the total.

Flow figures are KRX investor-type trading value across all listed boards (KOSPI, KOSDAQ, KONEX), common stock only, excluding ETF, ETN and ELW; institutions = the KRX institutional total investor type. Foreign, institutional and retail do not sum to zero: the balance, KRW 996B (~$743M) net bought on this session, sits with other corporations and other foreign investors, categories this report does not collect.
