KOSPI -5.80% | KOSDAQ -1.17% | Retail absorbed KRW 4.56T (~$3.3B) alone as foreign and institutional money exited together

The Number That Matters

Foreign investors sold KRW 3.48T (~$2.5B) and institutions sold KRW 1.27T (~$911M), KRW 4.75T (~$3.4B) of combined supply hitting the tape in a single session. Retail absorbed KRW 4.56T (~$3.3B) of it. The index fell 5.80%. The question is not whether retail is brave. The question is whether retail has the balance sheet to keep doing this.

Where the Money Went

Foreign selling was a two-stock liquidation: SK Hynix KRW 1.826T (~$1.3B) and Samsung Electronics KRW 1.042T (~$745M) accounted for the bulk of the KRW 3.48T (~$2.5B) exit. On the buy side, foreigners concentrated in Korean brokerages, Kiwoom Securities KRW 27.5B (~$20M), Korea Investment Holdings KRW 27.1B (~$19M), Samsung Securities KRW 22.6B (~$16M). Institutions sold Samsung Electronics KRW 733B (~$524M) and SK Hynix KRW 472B (~$337M) while buying Hanwha Aerospace KRW 55.4B (~$40M), HPSP KRW 35.8B (~$26M), and Isupetasys KRW 32.4B (~$23M). HPSP was the sole conviction name, both foreign and institutional buyers, retail selling.

Why the Market Moved

1. SOX fell 4.98% overnight, applying direct pressure to Korean semiconductor names that dominate index weight.

2. Foreign and institutional selling converged on SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics simultaneously, removing any bid support in the two largest KOSPI constituents.

3. Korea's yield curve reached its steepest since 2021, adding valuation pressure on growth-sensitive names.

The Uncomfortable Question

Retail has now absorbed the combined foreign and institutional exit in successive large down sessions, each time preventing a full cascade. But KRW 4.56T (~$3.3B) of retail buying against a 5.80% index decline means the absorption is not stopping the move, it is only slowing it. The unresolved question is at what point the retail bid exhausts itself, and whether the deposit base as of August 14 still reflects the buying capacity after today's drawdown.

Key Disclosures Today

SK Hynix filed a treasury share acquisition decision and a share cancellation decision on DART today. KRW 40.0T (~$28.6B, converted at today's close of KRW 1,398.3), 24.07m shares, 3.30% of shares outstanding, to be bought on the open market between 20 August and 19 November and then cancelled outright, not held in treasury. Same session foreigners sold KRW 1.826T (~$1.3B) of the stock.

KoreaAlpha Take

Foreign investors sold their two largest Korean positions while simultaneously buying Korean brokerage stocks. That is not a rotation, it is a statement about where they think the stress lands next. The unresolved question is whether the brokerage buying reflects a bet on capital markets consolidation or simply collateral positioning ahead of further volatility.

Retail absorbed today's session. It has absorbed every large down session in this cycle. That record ends the moment the deposit base stops replenishing faster than it is drawn down.

The buying starts tomorrow. Spread evenly across the roughly 63 trading days in that window, KRW 40.0T is about KRW 635B (~$454M) a day, close to 35% of what foreign investors sold in this one name today. The filing discloses no daily pace, so that average is a ceiling on how much it can smooth, not a promise of support. What separates it from most Korean buybacks is the final step: the shares are cancelled, so the count falls permanently instead of parking in treasury where it can be reissued.

The trade is simple: watch whether retail net buying in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics holds above KRW 3T (~$2.1B) on the next session where foreign selling continues at today's scale.
