Daily Pulse: August 10, 2026
KOSPI +0.65% | KOSDAQ +6.97% | Foreign net sell KRW 1.49T (~$1.1B), Samsung Electronics alone accounted for KRW 1.02T (~$719M) of that exit
The Number That Matters
Three consecutive sessions of foreign net selling, and the pattern has not shifted once: SK Square, Hyundai Motor, LIG Defence and Aerospace in the buy basket, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in the sell column. Today foreigners sold KRW 1.02T (~$719M) of Samsung Electronics and KRW 410B (~$289M) of SK Hynix while the KOSPI closed up 0.65%. Institutions and retail absorbed the outflow.
Where the Money Actually Went
Foreign buying concentrated in SK Square (+KRW 59B, ~$42M), Hyundai Motor (+KRW 41B, ~$29M), LIG Defence and Aerospace (+KRW 35B, ~$25M), Celltrion (+KRW 29B, ~$20M), and Hanwha Ocean (+KRW 26B, ~$18M). The basket is holdcos, autos, defence, and biotech. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together absorbed KRW 1.43T (~$1.0B) in foreign selling. Institutions contributed KRW 567B (~$400M) to the floor; retail added KRW 900B (~$635M). Investor deposits stood at KRW 104.1T (~$73.4B) as of August 6, the most recent figure available, published with a lag.
Why the Market Moved
1. Institutions and retail absorbed foreign selling across a third consecutive session, providing enough floor for a +0.65% KOSPI close.
2. KOSDAQ surged +6.97%, driven by biotech and small-cap names entirely disconnected from the semiconductor selloff on the main board.
3. Hanwha expanded its stake in Korea Aerospace Industries to 15.89%, filing for merger review, structural defence sector consolidation that drew foreign buying in adjacent names.
The Uncomfortable Question
Foreign investors sold KRW 1.43T (~$1.0B) of the two names that define KOSPI direction while SOX gained on Friday. If the semiconductor index is rising globally and foreign capital is still exiting Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the question is no longer whether the timing is wrong, it is whether the thesis for re-entering Korean semiconductors has been abandoned entirely, with the holdco and defence basket serving as a permanent substitute rather than a rotation waypoint.
Key Disclosures Today
Jinwon Lifescience filed an amended rights offering decision on DART, amendment to previously disclosed capital raise.
KoreaAlpha Take
A KOSPI gain built on institutional and retail absorption of foreign semiconductor selling is not recovery, it is a floor held by the only two buyers left in the room, and that floor has a ceiling.
The foreign buy basket today was holdcos, defence, and autos. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix did not appear on the foreign buy list. The unresolved question is whether foreign capital has structurally repriced Korean semiconductors out of its allocation model, or whether the exit is event-driven and reversible. A KOSDAQ surge divorced entirely from the main board dynamic answers nothing.
The trade is simple: watch whether Samsung Electronics or SK Hynix re-enters the foreign buy list before institutional absorption capacity runs dry.
